Having moved back to Northern California and the East Bay Area of San Francisco, I find myself once again looking for a home church. Antioch, CA is not as Liberal as Claremont, CA as it is not a college town. However, Reformed churches that are not Liberal is a problem none of the less. Not that there is all that many Reformed churches in existence here.
Before any Reformed persons take offense, most Reformed churches here are the Liberal PCUSA (Presbyterian Church USA) or Liberal Lutheran churches. There is no PCA (Presbyterian Church in America) churches nearby, A few RCA (Reformed Church of America) and OPC (Orthodox Presbyterian Church) exists but not close. Not aware of any Reformed Baptist churches. Attempts to plant new PCA churches in the area has had mixed results. The PCA new church plant that I attended for awhile in nearby Concord, CA no longer exists. The attempt to replace the Concord PCA church with one in Walnut Creek didn't work out. City Church SF was PCA with a Tim Keller influence but switched to RCA.
The small Fundamentalist Free-Will Baptist Churches exist but I find it difficult to fellowship with those that are offended by my Calvinism / Lutheranism beliefs as much as I am offended by their man-made legal rule list that I am expected to obey as a non-member of their church and it gets worse if I was to become a member. I always desire that members of these churches read Martin Luther's "On Christian Liberty".
A Evangelical Free-Will Baptist Mega-Church exists which is of the same denomination as Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis. MN. I attended Bethlehem Baptist Church while living in Bloomington, MN. However, Bethlehem Baptist Church is very 5 Point Calvinist whereas Golden Hills Community Church can be rated as 1.5 Point Calvinist. About the only strong point I detect is the "P" of TULIP with some agreement on "I".
I detected the "Willow Creek" influence before anyone told me about it. There is "Saddleback" influence too through the "Purpose Driven" books.
Bethlehem Baptist Church used Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology book for its Sunday School classes whereas Golden Hills Community Church uses the Discovery 1 through 3 books. I am not aware of any controversy on the internet about the Discovery course like there is on the Alpha course.
